How do we value our most precious resource? While the world may run on petroleum, our world survives on an even more precious resource—water. Our economy, our society and our culture all depend on water. How we manage water, and how we determine the value of water rights are crucial and increasingly complex. And yet, many issues in the fundamental valuation of water rights remain unresolved. Water: Valuing the Ultimate Resource, presented by the Centre for Advanced Property Economics, features nine speakers making presentations on the history and commerce in water, its conservation, and the economic and social consequences of its management. The conference will be held November 21-22, 2005, at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The conference will address the legal, social, and commercial aspects of water rights. Water: Valuing the Ultimate Resource has been designed with sections on:
Nine speakers will make presentations on the history and commerce in water, its conservation, and the economic and social consequences of its management. Although most real property-oriented appraisers tend to think that all water rights are the same, selection of the appropriate valuation approach depends on whether a water right derives from riparian, appropriative, federal reservation, contract or access principles. Once in the right ballpark, particular aspects of each water-right variety's attributes bear on the extent of value of the right. One presentation will attempt to present the categorical distinctions, discuss the geographical expression of each of the categories and identify some unique problems in each. The registration fee for the Water Rights Symposium is $295 if received by October 15, 2005, or $325 thereafter. Registration information is available here. A room rate of $119 per night has been arranged at the MGM Grand. Reservations should be received by October 15. For room reservations, please contact the MGM Grand Hotel or call the reservations desk at 877-880-0880. Inform the reservations agent you are attending the CAPE Water Rights Symposium and use reference code CPW003. The program will begin on Monday, November 21 at 8:30 am. Sponsored by The Centre for Advanced Property Economics, the symposium is the second in a series of three symposia focusing on the valuation of mineral, water, and timber rights.
